Skirt Sports Fall 2012 Catalog Shoot

Wow! It’s been a while since I’ve Blogged. Well no time like the present, right?

I recently finished shooting the Skirt Sport Fall 2012 catalog. That’s not a typo, it really is for 2012, a year out. In the clothing industry samples arrive from the manufacturer but aren’t necessarily in the correct fabric or color so there is a lot of graphic design and Photoshop work to be done in post for the catalog. The actual product will arrive and be available well into next year. So I have to keep the work private until the catalog has been finalized and produced. Well, the catalog is now in the hands of vendors and reps so I can release the images.

This year Skirt Sports stepped up the catalog a big notch! Thanks to a wonderful and creative team we assembled the best catalog and images to date. We had some of Boulder’s finest Athletes to model for us. A Big Thanks to Nicole DeBoom, owner and creator or Skirt Sports, Leanne Hand, their new Marketing Guru and of course my rockstar artistic director Chris Grack-Wilson! I am super pumped about my latest work with Skirt Sports! Nicole DeBoom and her team are stepping it up on so many fronts. The first of the year saw Skirt Sports moving into their new, much larger facility. It is awesome! In their new building we had a perfect space to work with to create a studio. It is a large open space with a kitchenette, restrooms, shower, equipment storage and the ideal rectangular shape. The studio is designed for product photography and a new piece for the both of us, video… another example of ‘stepping it up’. Recently the whole team assembled, brainstormed and created the video element. To better illustrate the features of their clothing we’ve published our first product videos on their site.

My youngest turns 6 soon and I was going through some photos of him and came across a Portrait shoot I did with one of his teachers, Ms. Ajanta. What a beautiful woman and soul!

I Can't Believe It's March Already!

Wow! It's March already and I haven't posted a single photo in 2010. Slackin'! Well it has nothing to do with my not having taken any photos. I have been busy with some fun gigs. First off I had the chance to shoot with Jessica, a Marine Lt. currently serving our country in Afghanistan. She was home on leave and on a very cold December morning in Colorado we shot at the Morrone Ranch. Jess is such a joy to work with. Second is a model you should recognize from prior projects, Ashley. Ashley is a willing soul that has fun shooting just about anything I dream up. She is one tough and awesome girl! Thanks to both Jessica and Ashley! I appreciate both of you!

Although she is a genuine beauty she is a confessed Tomboy. She & I work out at the same place doing Muay Thai Kickboxing and I can tell you she is one tough woman. Catalogue Shoot for Dara Gear and Tran's Kickboxing & Fitness

Recently I did a photo shoot with Fitness Model Morgan Tran & Master H.D. Tran for Dara Gear, a Muay Thai & Fitness Clothing Line. Bridget Nannen is Dara Gear and also served as Artistic Director for the shoot. Thanks a ton Bridget, You Rock! John Davie of Vivid Design did the design and layout of the catalogue. Check out his site Modus Mind Body. It's always a treat to be a part of a team like this and to see such a great end result from several top professionals. I'm the Birthday Party Host with the Most!

For my daughter's Birthday we hosted a little fashion show party at my Boulder, CO studio. We had a chocolate fountain, finger sandwiches and sparkling apple cider in real wine glasses. All the girls brought their favorite outfits and strutted their stuff to the sounds of Miley Cyrus & Kidz Bop. The little buddy loves the studio too, it gives him a chance to break dance.

I remember when I was a young (short) and avid basketball fan. I recall going to the local courts in San Jose, CA and wishing the rims were lower so I could slam dunk. Well the court in my hood has an adjustable height and most everyday when the little buddy and I go pick up his sister at the bus stop the local boys have dropped the rim to a manageable slam dunk height.

Field Trip to NCAR in Boulder, CO

NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) is a landmark at the base of the Flatirons in Boulder, CO. The name pretty much describes what they do. The building was designed by renowned architect I. M. Pei in 1961. Last week my daughter's class went on a field trip to this cool facility and as any good Dad with a camera does I took mine to capture the class having fun. I did not know what to expect but needless to say I will be going back for a "photo shoot", there are so many cool shots to be had at NCAR.

There is a section of NCAR that is open to the public with some interesting hands on displays. For field trips the staff takes the kids on a tour and then they get to do some lab experiments. Below the kids got to use plastic bottles and bubbles to learn the impact of hot and cold air.

But it does excite one into looking forward to the beauty of being outdoors. What it does for me is get me fired up for my annual pilgrimage... Yosemite National Park!

Sports Turf Managers Association Magazine Cover

This month's issue of the Sports Turf Managers Association industry trade magazine features their 2009 incoming President, Abby McNeal. Abby has worked with the Denver Broncos on Invesco Field and is currently the Turf Manager for The School of Mines in Golden, CO. The campus and fields for The School of Mines is at the base of the Rocky Mountains along the banks of Clear Creek and a rock's throw upstream from the famous Coors Brewery.

The assignment for this shoot was to hi-light Abby and to showcase what she does so well. In lay mens terms... she makes the grass green and pretty. We met before daylight on a chilly October morning. I would set up a shot, take some tests then we would jump in our cars to warm up. Once our skin had color we would jump out, shoot and repeat. The shot that was selected for the cover was from our last set up.

Bridal Portraits after the Windy Colorado Wedding

This seems like a common enough occurrence for me that I decided to post something and address the issue. More than a few times a year I'm approached to take some "Pictures of me in my dress" after the wedding has come and gone. This happens regardless if I shot the wedding or not... but more often not. In this case I did not shoot the wedding and poor Josie's wedding day was outdoors at a popular Colorado Wedding Venue however it was extremely windy and she wasn't able to get any nice portraits of her in her dress. So we scheduled some studio time and got her what she wanted. Often this kind of shoot is pre-meditated so we can get Grooms & / or family in the photo as well.

Maternity Portrait of Colorado's New Year's Baby?

Well I don't think the timing was quite right for a January 1st baby but Jen & I did cut it a little close on her Maternity Portraits. A friend of a friend on Facebook, Jen & I hooked up in December and quickly scheduled a Maternity Shoot as she is expecting the first of January. As of this posting I don't think baby is here, but soon. Congratulations Scott & Jen!

Two Go Boutique Studio Shoot with Lisa Wagner

Recently Lisa brought some of her girls into the studio to shoot some of her latest fashions and we just turned it into a little Glam Party. What a blast! The ladies had a great time as did I.

A Colorado Photographer doing Commercial work for a Texas Dentist?

When people ask me what kind of photography I do my standard answer now is "I shoot people". Typically this meant "I shoot people who are in the process of getting married" however for the last year I've been shooting much more than just weddings. Fortunately the commercial Photography has opened up doors that lead to other referrals and opportunities in the same arena, unlike weddings where I typically get referrals for other weddings. Weddings are almost always a good party and I'm not one to pass up a good party so I will always welcome the opportunity to shoot them.

One of the latest assignments was to shoot a commercial portrait for a Dentist in Texas. He is moving his office and needs a new sign and who knows, maybe a billboard. He likes the message and the image on his current sign but since he is getting a new sign why not a new image? So if you're ever in Texas and see this girl on a sign, billboard or side of a bus, say to yourself Hey, I know that photographer and I think I know that model too!
