So Steve Z sent me a link for a little 'workshop' on the Pearl Street Mall here in Boulder. We both figured what the hey, we're always on the lookout for new morsels & tips and what better way than to participate in a workshop with a bunch of your peers? We had at our disposal a number of Brides & Grooms to photograph up, down & all around Pearl Street Mall. Take 3 or 4 wedding parties, 25 or so photographers with their gear and plop them down in the epicenter of the Republic and you will get some heads to turn. To me this seemed kind of obvious but it still didn't deter a number of Einsteins from asking "Is there some kind of wedding or something going on here?"

I will skip any and all details about the workshop and just get to the pics. OH YEAH! The highlight of the entire evening were Margs at Rio Grande with a lovely group of young ladies... made the entire evening worthwhile.

Thanks Ladies

So a Blog is suppose to be about what one has been up to lately I guess. As of late I've been doing a few things I enjoy as far as shooting and personal activities. I've had the opportunity to shoot a couple of beautiful women in the studio, Senior Portraits, knock off a few 14ers here in Colorado and have just wrapped up a Commercial Project with ABRA Auto Body & Glass that has been a tremendously fun assignment. I've always appreciated Architecture and my friend Angela Moore put the good word in for me and I procured a contract to shoot all their locations in Colorado. Thanks Angela

I'm still open for the remainder of the year for Weddings, Portraits, Special Events and of course I always welcome a challenge to shoot outside the box.

I've procured two dates in May for Botanical Dreaming Workshops with Mark Johnson of Radiant Vista so keep your eyes open for that if great images of flowers are what you like. The dates are May 15th - 16th & May 29th & 29th.

Well I hope and trust your summer is coming to a delightful end and go shoot something fun.

Bobbie

I use to be a suit with a closet full of pressed white dress shirts... There are over 50 in the Colorado Rockies and this is a stamp of my wife's first two. When people ask me what it's like living in Colorado I just answer "It doesn't suck"

What does a Photographer do when he is in the mood to shoot but not feeling terribly creative? Sometimes with a bag full of gear I think we can't see the forest for the trees. So simplify, grab a lens and walk around the house, take a stroll in the yard or set up something simple in the studio. That's where I was a couple of times in the last several weeks. Self assignment #1 was set something up in my home office and self assignment #2 was grab a lens and go outside.

#1 Smoke with a strobe camera left and a reflector camera right.

#2 Garden sprinkler.

To see more smoke visit my website 5280fotos.com

I had a fantastic opportunity to be a second shooter to Glen Johnson of Aperture Photographics for a wedding at the Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch in Beaver Creek, CO. Glen is a destination Wedding Photographer out of Eugene, OR that has published a great book essential for any aspiring Wedding Photographer. I have a copy of his book that I keep as a reference and to read through at the beginning of each wedding season. Long story short Glen booked Megan & Steven's wedding, our calendars jived and I finally got to meet and shoot with Glen at a place that I am familiar with: Beaver Creek - Bachelor Gulch - Vail. It was a great learning experience hanging out with Glen, learning from him and to be the proverbial "fly on the wall" second shooter / artistic director / assistant. I recommend to any Photographer that shoots weddings using an assistant or second shooter to take the opportunity to sit in the co-pilot seat with another successful guru like Glen.

That is just part of the story. Megan & Steven selected one of the most beautiful locations to tie the knot there is, Vail - Beaver Creek and the Ritz-Carlton / Bachelor Gulch. Steven is an accomplished photographer himself; he and Megan absolutely made the day. Wedding Photographers sometimes get to make comments about how they wish all their weddings could be like this and this was one of them. Megan & Steven are very real down to earth people that showed the least amount of stress on their big day as I've ever seen. They welcomed their guests warmly and embraced all of us contracted artisans whole heartedly. They and their families were an absolute delight to be around. Add their great attitudes and endless energy to the service provided by any Ritz-Carlton and Cuisine from Wolfgang Puck's Spago made for a little working vacation for me.

Of course Megan & Steven had experienced help to pull off such a splendid party... Heather Allen, President of Table 6 Productions. Often Brides will assume that since they are not having a large wedding they do not need a Wedding Planner and endure copious amounts of stress doing everything themselves. I'm here to tell you that this was not a large wedding, Heather had a large part in making it an enjoyable low stress affair for everyone involved. Money spent on Heather would result in money (not to mention headaches) saved. I would recommend at least a consult with her early in your wedding planning process.

To Glen: It was great to finally meet and work with you! Countless Thanks!

To Steven & Megan: Thank You for a wonderful assignment!

To Heather: It was a pleasure to see you in action and what you helped create!

Please enjoy my Second Shooter perspective...

All images property of Glen Johnson - Aperture Photographics

Recently I've been working with fellow Photographer Steve Z utilizing strobes. This allows us to have more flexibility and interest in our location shooting by using off camera flashes powered by batteries rather than full studio lighting and the need for electricity. Last week Steve & I had a couple of outings, one where I "modeled" and another where we had a model much prettier than I. Check out his BLOG & the Boulder Strobist BLOG. Yet another example of our minds working alike is Steve turned me onto the Strobist, a BLOG with some great tutorials and information. I came across a Do It Yourself project on how to make Beauty Dishes and emailed Steve writing that we should do this. He replied with I've already been to Home Depot and have the stuff in my garage. So last week we threw a couple together and here are the results of my first shoot using a single light source off camera DIY Beauty Dish...

A friend of mine has one of those "old fashioned" dangerous trampolines... ya know, the type that doesn't have the netting around the edge. I guess I can see how the netting can keep injuries down by preventing the total eject of a double bounced kid and the eminent dry landing but to me the new tramps are promoting Ultimate Cage Fighting; I don't know which is worse. Besides wasn't it fun when we were kids with a "dangerous" trampoline that we could use as a diving board when we drug it up next to the pool? We had a sport whereas a bunch of my hooligan buddies and I would have a few after our Hockey games then all get on the trampoline in full gear and bounce each other off and / or break the egg. Ah, the good 'ol days... I digress. Anyway we finally worked out the logistics to get the kids on the trampoline... enjoy.

Dry Colorado air + Trampoline + Long Hair.
Ashley is one of my dearest friends. We have much in common and we and our families are able to do many fun things together. Ashley has always been an Athlete and is a life coach and mentor to young and old alike. Currently she teaches a Physical Education program at a school in Boulder, CO and recently has implemented a discipline that she is quite passionate about, Martial Arts. She is accomplished in both Tae Kwon Do (Tae = to break with foot - Kwon = to break with hand - Do = Art of or Way of) and Muay Thai Kickboxing. A little while back she invited me to workout with her and since then I too have been hooked. Ashley trains & teaches at Tran's Martial Arts in Longmont, CO.
On one of the very few nice days in Boulder during the month of February the temperatures soared into the low 50's. I took advantage of the weather and washed my car. These two young ladies thought it to be so nice they appeared from the house wearing bathing suits and wanted to play in the water. "Are you crazy?!" The response was "No!, we just want to play in the water" So I provided a couple of umbrellas and let them have at it. I truly didn't think it was going to last long enough to get my camera. Well it did and I was able to get a few shots of some squirly girlies having some fun.
This was the second part of the shoot I did with Mariko for the Aveda Institute in Downtown Denver. Heather did the hair and make-up for this shoot. The dress that Mariko is wearing belonged to Heather's Grandmother so this was neat for her to see. Mariko was having fun and doing great with the whole shoot and when I grabbed the manikin from the closet things got silly. Mariko is such a great sport and soul.

I'm sure you will be visiting the Blog for a myriad of reasons; all reasons being your own. As of late I've been playing with Fashion which naturally produces results in the Portrait category. Here we have a sampling of just that. Enjoy...

This is Pam & Sheila. I met Pam at the 2006 Denver Grand Prix Champ Car Race; she was competing in a Beach Volleyball Tournament that was going on in the Expo area of the race. Pam (on the left) is on the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. We did this shoot at an indoor Beach Volleyball facility in Broomfield, CO. She brought Sheila along to help 'set' and it turned out to be two for one for me. What great athletes and women Pam and Sheila are! It was a pleasure shooting them. Check out more at 5280Fotos.com

This is Mariko. We did a fashion shoot for the Aveda Institute in Denver, CO. Mariko has professionally trained at Aveda and will be joining a Salon at some exotic location soon. This shoot took place in the alley next to the Aveda Institute off the 16th Street Mall downtown. As you can imagine with the commotion of a photo shoot right off the Mall we had many passers by and lots of swooning fans. Applause and whistles were constant. You can check out the shoot at 5280Fotos.com.

Jill is a fantastic natural and trained model. Her good friend Leah Ballinger owns Blue Bridal

on the 16th Street Mall in Denver, CO. We shot Leslie in a few different gowns around the Mall. What is funny is that when you're shooting a Bride in public it really turns heads, draws a crowd and generates a lot of attention.

These two young ladies were great little models during a Workshop at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno.

Lori has some of the most incredible eyes I've ever seen. After I took a few shots I showed them the pictures on my D200; they scrolled through the photos and saw some shots from a bikini shoot on a beach from the day before. Immediately they became interested, started laughing and speaking in Spanish what I could only guess was something like "You da man"! I didn't get any shots of them smiling but they did buy me a shot of the worst Tequila I've ever tasted.

Okay...
The first Studio Images of 2008 were taken with my good friend Mark Johnson. Mark is a very accomplished photographer and educator. I stumbled upon Mark's site The Radiant Vista while browsing the Internet for some Photoshop tutorials. Lo and behold I learned Mark was a Boulder, Colorado resident and teaches Photoshop classes at Boulder Digital Arts! I've taken his classes and can say he is one of the better educators I've known. So good in fact I've hired him a few times for one on one tutoring. I feel privileged to have worked with him during his research and writing of his new Photoshop PS3 Companion eBook, a must for anyone using Photoshop. On a Friday afternoon Mark & I picked up some grocery store cut flowers, went into the studio and played with some of Mark's top secret techniques. His Online Bookstore sells his Botanical Garden Book as well as other selections and you can get a sense of what kind of stuff we shot that day. Mark sent me some finished product of what he shot that day; you may find it on his site and / or in a book in the future. Keep checking his site.

As for my results I can say I had no idea what to expect. I followed Mark's lead to some extent but the scene was very condusive for each of us to do our own thing. I shot with a few of my old stand-by lenses that I'm comfortable with however spent a great deal of time shooting with my new Lensbaby. These are crazy little lenses that produce some dramatic effects.

Enjoy...

Happy New Year!!!

This is a new venture for me... Blogging. Hopefully we can all exercise some patience as I go through the learning process. I am experimenting with this Blog as more of a Freestyle supplement to my Wedding & Fashion Photography. You can check out those images at: 5280Fotos.com

     ©Bobbie Turner 2005 - 2008

What better photo for my first entry into a Blog than of one of my favorite places on Earth. July 2007 we were set up for a photo shoot of Half Dome from one of Yosemite's most popular lookouts. The lookout is a couple of miles from our campsite so we packed for the night with camera equipment, snacks, chairs, headlamps and a few Guiness'. We photographed & took video of the sunset and the Full Moon rising. At least once a year I make the pilgrimage to Yosemite with long time friends Jeff Benjamin & Peter Padilla, both out of Reno, Nevada. For years Jeff & I have been backpacking Yosemite and we always talked of hiring Shirpas to haul our packs to our campsite so we could lug our camera equipment and 2007 was the year. We hired three fellas from the Search & Rescue squad to tote our 65 lbs packs up and out of Yosemite Valley to our campsite. The three of us loaded up with our camera gear and accomplished a 10 year old goal. We captured some of our best images of all the years. To see more check out our 2007 Yosemite photos.

Here is a slideshow presentation of some images I've captured at Yosemite over the last several years.
